Jakarta, April 7, 2026 – PT Kaltim Methanol Industri (PT KMI) has achieved a strategic milestone at the national level by receiving the Green Leadership Award at the 2025 PROPER Awards ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Environment (KLH) of the Republic of Indonesia. This award represents the highest form of recognition for the company’s leadership in environmental management and corporate social responsibility.
PT KMI’s success in environmental management is inseparable from the strong leadership of Ir. Agus Priyatno, IPU, as General Director. Under his leadership, PT KMI has successfully transformed its operations and business practices toward more efficient, responsible, and long-term-oriented green industrial practices for sustainable development. This success led Ir. Agus Priyatno, IPU, to receive the 2025 Green Leadership Award from the Ministry of Environment (KLH) of the Republic of Indonesia.
As the only chemical company in Indonesia that processes natural gas into methanol, PT KMI has contributed to addressing extraordinary challenges such as the energy transition by supplying raw materials for biodiesel, supporting national food security, reducing inequality, and alleviating poverty.
PT KMI, located in the Kaltim Industrial Estate in Bontang, East Kalimantan, has identified an opportunity to utilize CO2 emissions generated by companies within the industrial estate. PT KMI has successfully implemented Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology to produce low-carbon-intensity methanol. Additionally, PT KMI has conducted a feasibility study on the use of biomethane as a feedstock for biomethanol production. Both programs demonstrate PT KMI’s commitment to utilizing renewable energy and transitioning to a low-carbon energy system toward Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in Indonesia as part of the solution to the global climate change issue.
The successful energy transition program implemented internally at KMI was subsequently extended to the community in Bontang City through the “Kotak Kehidupan” (Life Box) innovation—an efficient packaging solution for fish catch utilizing nitrogen cooling. The “Life Box” offers an innovative solution for coastal fishermen by providing storage boxes for their catch. By utilizing liquid nitrogen from recycled industrial processes, PT KMI has developed a system for making ice cubes without electricity. Through the “Life Box,” fishermen can keep their catch fresh longer, increase their income, reduce emissions, and actively participate in preserving the coastal ecosystem.
